The Kano State Shura Council has barred popular Islamic scholar Sheikh Abubakar Lawan Triumph from delivering sermons and public lectures pending investigation into petitions accusing him of making statements deemed offensive to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Council’s Secretary, Shehu Wada Sagagi, disclosed on Wednesday.

SolaceBase reports that Sagagi explained that the council reviewed all petitions, noting that some lacked supporting evidence and were therefore dropped.

He said petitions accompanied by evidence, including video clips, were carefully studied, and the committee compiled a detailed report based on their findings.

Sagagi added that Sheikh Triumph has not yet been summoned to respond but will be called upon soon to defend himself.

To facilitate this, the council has formed a seven-member sub-committee tasked with inviting him and ensuring that the proceedings are transparent and publicized through media channels.

SolaceBase had reported that the controversy arose when petitioners alleged that Sheikh Triumph made statements about the Prophet’s birth, personal hygiene, and the fate of his parents that were considered offensive.

The Kano State government referred the matter to the Shura Council, a respected body of Islamic scholars, to provide guidance in line with Islamic law.

Sagagi urged the public to remain calm, emphasizing that the cleric and petitioners will be given equal opportunity to present their cases and that the measure to suspend preaching is temporary until the investigation concludes.
