Kano govt begins erosion control project in Sumaila community
Kano State Government has commenced an erosion control project in Rimi, Sumaila Local Government Area, following complaints about severe land degradation threatening the community and a local primary school.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Wednesday.
He said the intervention was ordered by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after a resident, Mallam Nafiu Rimi Sulaiman raised concerns about the worsening erosion in the area.

Dr. Hashim, who visited Rimi to inspect the project, assured residents that the work would continue without delay until completion.

He also disclosed that Mallam Nafiu, who initially reported the issue, is among those employed to work on the site.
He added that Governor Yusuf had prioritized addressing erosion problems in several parts of Kano, including Rarin in Dawakin Tofa, Tudun Fulani (Ungoggo), Kwankwasiyya City, Bulbula Gayawa, Kiru, and Bajallabe.

The commissioner urged the public to avoid illegal land excavation, construction on waterways, and indiscriminate tree cutting, which he said were major contributors to land erosion.
