Kano govt completes drainage project, ends years of flooding in Ajingi community
The Kano State Government has completed and handed over a major drainage project in Toranke town, Ajingi Local Government Area, effectively ending years of devastating flooding that had claimed lives and destroyed homes and farmlands in the community.
The development was disclosed on Friday in a statement by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahir M. Hashim, who said the project was executed with the approval of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as part of the administration’s commitment to protecting lives, property and critical infrastructure across the state.
According to the statement, the drainage intervention has brought lasting relief to residents of Toranke, who had for years suffered seasonal flooding that led to loss of lives and widespread damage.
Dr. Hashim noted that following the completion of the project, the community recorded rainfall this year without any casualties or loss of property, describing the outcome as a major milestone.

He said the project reflects the resolve of the state government to build durable and sustainable infrastructure while proactively addressing climate-related challenges.
As part of the handover process, residents were sensitised on the importance of maintaining the drainage channels, particularly by avoiding the dumping of refuse, blocking waterways or erecting structures on them.
The commissioner added that the project also incorporated a stormwater harvesting system designed to support irrigation farming while protecting farmlands from erosion and flood damage.
Residents of Toranke expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work and commended the government for involving the community from the planning stage through to completion.

In appreciation, the community named the rehabilitated road after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, now known as Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf Street.
Dr. Hashim said the government would continue to prioritise community participation as a key pillar in the execution of sustainable development projects across Kano State.
