Kano govt empowers 100 PWDs with special learning materials

The Kano State Government has empowered 100 learners with cognitive and developmental disabilities through the distribution of special learning materials and assistive devices, in a move aimed at deepening inclusive education in the state.

The program, which took place on Friday at Mambayya House, was organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE).

SolaceBase reports that items distributed during the event included school uniforms, writing and learning materials, visual learning aids, rulers, pencils, books, audio calculators, school bags, lunch boxes, and shoes.

The Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, said the distribution was carried out under the directive of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to improve the educational capabilities of disabled learners.

Makoda, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Bashir Baffa Muhammad, added that the state government has prioritized education, allocating over 31 percent of its budget to the sector—surpassing international recommendations—to tackle learning poverty and raise standards to a global level.

He stated that, “The Governor has ensured that education for disabled people is taken to a standard equal to any in the world.

“These materials, authorized by His Excellency, are meant to reach the targeted learners directly so that they truly benefit from this gesture,” he added.

On his part, the AGILE State Project Coordinator, Mujitafa Aminu, explained that the initiative is designed to ensure that every child with a disability attains basic and secondary education in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

He revealed that AGILE has supported about 1,230 schools with small grants, 120 schools with large grants, and 10 schools with special grants, which have enabled rehabilitation works, provision of teaching materials, and installation of water and sanitation facilities.

He said that, “Our future plan is to ensure that every child, whether with or without disabilities, receives quality education in Kano State.”

He further noted that he was delighted with the success of the event and urged teachers to ensure proper use of the distributed materials.

Also speaking, the Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Muhammad Sambo, described the exercise as a bold affirmation that every child, regardless of ability, deserves access to education, dignity, and the tools to thrive.

“Under the leadership of His Excellency, Kano State has established a dedicated department for persons with disabilities, created a budget line for PWD programs, launched a statewide registration exercise, and initiated para-sports and awareness campaigns to foster inclusivity. These efforts show that inclusion is not an afterthought but a guiding principle,” she stated.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the ministry’s support for initiatives that uplift vulnerable groups, adding, “To our learners—you are not defined by your challenges, but by your courage, creativity, and potential. We see you, we celebrate you, and we will continue to stand with you.”

Also speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Musa Muhammad Kura, the representative of the National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Kano State chapter, commended the government’s effort.

He noted that the gesture will go a long way in supporting learners with special needs and called for sustained interventions to reach more students.

AGILE revealed that while 100 students benefited in this pilot phase, the real target is 1,000 learners. Data already available shows that over 11,000 learners with disabilities have been identified across the state, with plans to reach all of them before the end of the project.
