In its effort to eradicate waste on roads, the Kano State government has evacuated over 150 truckloads of refuse on Maiduguri Road.

SolaceBase reports that the Deputy Managing Director, Operations, Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), Alhaji Lamin Mukhtar Hassan,  announced this during the waste evacuation, on Monday in Kano.

According to him, Maiduguri Road has been a notorious site for indiscriminate waste dumping for the past 10 years.

“This Maiduguri Road has waste dumped directly on the main road. This road links Kano State with almost 5 to 6 other states in Nigeria, including Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, and Borno, after which the road is named, among others,” he explained.

“Gov.  Abba Kabir Yusuf is very concerned about maintaining cleanliness in Kano State. He emphasizes prompt and routine waste evacuation. The indiscriminate waste dumping on Maiduguri Road has been a significant concern to him, the agency, and our ministry.”

“The governor directed the immediate evacuation of all waste from Maiduguri Road, a task that typically requires an excavator for two to three days. Today, we are using two payloaders to expedite the process and have completely banned further waste dumping on this road. His Excellency has also provided a new waste collection center at Fandaudu for residents to use, ensuring that the agency can routinely evacuate waste without any issues.”

“The government has prohibited anyone from dumping refuse on this road. The owner of the adjacent plot, where the waste is most concentrated, has promised to construct a new drainage system in front of the road. Additionally, he has committed to deploying guards to secure the area and direct any individuals attempting to dump waste to the new government-provided collection centre.”

The managing director noted that apart from the Maiduguri dump site which has completely been evacuated, Ibo road by Niger road in Sabon Gari and some other parts of the town.

He implored residents to notify the organization whenever they are embarking on drainage clearance for prompt evacuation rather than dumping the same on roads.
