The Kano State Government, through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, has commissioned a stormwater drainage project in Ladanai Quarters of Nasarawa Local Government Area, as part of efforts to address flooding and improve residents’ living conditions.

The project was inaugurated on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad, who said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to executing people-oriented projects across the state.

Speaking during the ceremony, the commissioner noted that the drainage project was undertaken following requests from the community, adding that it demonstrates the government’s inclusive approach to development.

“As you can see, we are here today to commission the drainage works carried out in Ladanai community. This is in line with His Excellency’s commitment to ensuring that projects that improve the lives and livelihoods of the good people of Kano are implemented across the state,” he said.

He explained that the community had long faced flooding challenges, especially during the rainy season, which negatively impacted residents socially and economically.

According to him, similar projects have been executed in various parts of Nasarawa LGA and beyond, as part of a broader plan to establish an effective drainage system across Kano.

“In every construction, renewal or rehabilitation work undertaken by the state government, we are integrating effective drainage systems. This will ultimately ensure a functional drainage master plan for the state,” he added.

SolaceBase reports that the commissioner expressed optimism that such interventions would significantly reduce urban flooding and enable residents to enjoy a safer rainy season.

He also called on residents to take ownership of the infrastructure by ensuring proper maintenance, avoiding actions that could damage the drainage system, and promptly reporting any challenges to the authorities.

“We have delivered the infrastructure, but sustainability requires collective effort. The community must ensure proper usage and maintenance to preserve these facilities,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government Area, Yusuf Imam, represented by the Councillor of Hotoro North, Ibrahim Muhammad Musa, expressed appreciation to the state government for the project and commended the commissioner for his dedication.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Ladanai Community Association, Jamilu Kabir, said residents had long suffered the effects of flooding, noting that the project would bring much-needed relief to the area.

The drainage project is expected to significantly mitigate flood risks and enhance environmental sustainability in the community.
