Kano govt introduces environmental protection laws to combat pollution
Kano State Government has announced the introduction of new environmental protection laws aimed at addressing rising pollution challenges in the state.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, stated this in a release he signed on Tuesday, shortly after presenting the laws to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, who expressed full support for the initiative.
“These laws were created to tackle environmental pollution, particularly issues related to the discharge of harmful chemicals, indiscriminate waste disposal, open defecation on roads, and the release of contaminated water by factories, among others,” Hashim explained.

SolaceBase reports that Dr. Hashim further revealed that, with the approval of the Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the ministry will embark on an eight-week public sensitization campaign.

The campaign will target individuals and sectors affected by the new laws to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness and environmental care.
“God willing, we will publish the laws in both Hausa and English within the week so that the public can read and understand them,” he added.
The Commissioner expressed hope that residents of Kano State will support the government’s efforts to promote a cleaner environment, which will improve public health and general well-being.
