Kano govt reacts to appeal court ruling on emirate dispute

Kano State Government has welcomed the recent Court of Appeal judgment in Abuja, which overturned previous Federal High Court rulings on the Emirate Council dispute.

SolaceBase reports that the verdict validates the government’s actions regarding chieftaincy appointments and reforms in the state’s traditional institutions. 

Speaking at a news conference on Saturday in Kano, key government officials, including the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isah Dederi, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Abdulkadri and the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya described the judgment as a triumph for justice and due process. 

“This ruling reaffirms our commitment to justice, fairness, and adherence to due process,” the officials stated.

“It validates the government’s efforts to modernize traditional structures while preserving the rich cultural heritage of Kano State.” 

The Court of Appeal’s decision nullifies previous judgments by the Federal High Court and upholds the law enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly on emirates.

Also, in one of the decisions of the appeal court, it directed one of the suit to be retried at the state high court.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all decisions, pronouncements, and orders made by the Federal High Court in Kano have been quashed,” the officials emphasized.

They added, “The Court of Appeal has upheld the legality of the law and actions taken by the state government.

“All institutions and individuals are required to comply with this judgment in strict adherence to the rule of law.” 

The officials further expressed appreciation to the judiciary for its impartiality and dedication to upholding justice.

“We thank the judiciary for their unwavering commitment to fairness and for clarifying the rightful jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters,” they said. 

They called on all parties involved to respect the judgment and collaborate with the government to promote peace and development.

“Let us put the collective good of Kano State above individual interests,” they added. 

The Kano State Government reiterated its commitment to working with traditional institutions to foster harmony and progress across the emirates, urging citizens to prioritize unity and the state’s development.
