Kano govt reaffirms commitment to climate justice

The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to climate justice and inclusive development, declaring that the state is not just participating in the national climate discourse but leading the way.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, in a statement he personally signed after the National Stakeholder Engagement Workshop on Nigeria’s Just Transition Guideline held in Kano.

According to the commissioner, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the state has emerged as a model for proactive climate governance through various bold initiatives.

“Our efforts include the development of the State Climate Change Policy and Action Plan, the creation of Nigeria’s first NYSC Climate CDS group, and an upcoming campaign to plant five million trees,” he said.

SolaceBase reports that Dr. Hashim further added that, “These steps demonstrate that subnational governments can take the lead in building a greener and fairer future.”

He also emphasized that a just transition is not solely about energy or technology but about protecting jobs, empowering youth, uplifting women, and ensuring that no community is left behind in the move toward sustainability.

He stressed the need for the realities of Northern Nigeria to be fully reflected in the national climate agenda, adding that justice should not be an afterthought but the foundation of all climate actions.
