Kano govt seals two warehouses over environmental nuisance

The Kano State Government has sealed off two warehouses in the Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government Area for violating environmental regulations by causing public nuisance.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Ismail Garba Gwammaja, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, on Saturday.

According to the statement, the warehouses, located along Airport Road by France Road, were found to be storing insecticides and fumigation materials that emitted offensive odours, disturbing residents and passersby in the vicinity.

The Director of Pollution Control at the ministry, Malam Ibrahim Nasir, who led the operation, said the action followed complaints from the community about the persistent bad smell coming from the warehouses.

PROMISES-DELIVERED

“Upon receiving the complaints, we dispatched environmental officers to investigate. The findings confirmed the allegations, and an abatement notice was served to the warehouse operators, directing them to relocate the materials. Their failure to comply led to the sealing of the premises and legal action has been initiated,” Nasir said.

Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health.

“Storing hazardous materials in residential or community areas poses significant environmental and health risks. We will not tolerate any actions that endanger the lives of our citizens,” Dr. Hashim stated.

He also encouraged residents to report any environmental violations to the appropriate authorities, adding that the ministry remains proactive in protecting the environment and promoting a healthier, greener Kano State.
