Kano govt slams APC’s shadow government proposal

The Kano State Government has strongly condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s plan to form a shadow government in the state, describing it as illegal, unconstitutional, and a desperate attempt to remain politically relevant.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, criticized the move announced by Alhaji Usman Alhaji, National Chairman of the APC Patriotic Volunteers, warning that such actions could have serious legal and social implications.

“Let me remind these elements within the Kano APC that, in a democratic system like ours, forming a government within a government is entirely illegal and unconstitutional,” Waiya stated.

“A shadow government, as practised in the United Kingdom, exists within a parliamentary system where opposition parties appoint ‘shadow ministers’ to scrutinize the ruling government.

“However, Nigeria operates a presidential system, which neither recognizes nor supports such a structure outside the institutional framework of the law.”

He further warned that the Kano State Government would not tolerate any actions aimed at destabilizing the state.

“Contemplating the formation of a shadow government is further proof of the APC’s continued plot to create chaos in Kano,” he said.

He added that “Such actions will not be tolerated, and the government stands ready to take decisive action against any individual or group involved in acts capable of disturbing the relative peace in the state.”

SolaceBase reports that Waiya also accused the APC of failing to accept its rejection at the polls, arguing that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration was focused on governance and development.

“It is on record that the APC has lost its political relevance in Kano State,” he added, “This latest move by some self-deceiving elements only confirms their desperation after being overwhelmingly rejected by the people.”

Highlighting the administration’s achievements, Waiya stated that the NNPP-led government has prioritized key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

“Our government has allocated the highest budgetary resources to education in the country, improved healthcare services, and invested in infrastructure to transform Kano into a modern economic hub.

“We are also committed to youth and women empowerment, poverty eradication, and institutional reforms to enhance transparency and accountability,”  he added.

The commissioner urged the APC to respect the democratic will of the people and allow Governor Yusuf’s administration to continue its work.

“No amount of political manoeuvring or sinister plots can distract His Excellency from delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Kano State,” he asserted.

He added that “Reckless and unconstitutional declarations will not change the reality that the APC has been rejected in Kano. Instead of making self-deceiving threats, they should accept defeat and move on.”

The Kano State Government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring peace and stability in the state.
