Kano govt steps up flood prevention efforts at major hotspots

Kano State Government has intensified efforts to tackle the risk of urban flooding ahead of the rainy season, with desilting and drainage clearance works currently ongoing at key flood-prone areas in the state.

This was disclosed in a statement personally signed by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, as obtained by SolaceBase on Monday.

Dr. Hashim said he personally supervised the ongoing interventions at the Dorayi Underpass, Jakara Drainage, and Baban Gwari Roundabout—areas he described as “critical hotspots” that have historically worsened flooding in the state.

He explained that the measures are aimed at restoring the natural flow of water and protecting communities from avoidable disasters.

The Commissioner stated that the proactive steps are part of the vision of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to build a climate-resilient Kano.

He added that the ministry’s activities are data-driven and aligned with recent alerts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which identified Kano among states at high risk of urban flooding due to blocked drains and poor waste disposal.

Dr. Hashim also appealed to residents to desist from dumping refuse into drainage systems, which he said remains one of the major contributors to urban flooding.

He urged the public to report violators to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for necessary action.

“Together, we can build a cleaner, safer, and more climate-resilient Kano,” the Commissioner concluded.
