The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Kano branch, has condemned what it described as repeated incidents of harassment and unlawful arrest of lawyers by police officers in the state.

In a statement signed on Tuesday by its chairman, Usman Umar Fari, the association cited two recent cases, which it said amounted to violations of human rights and an attack on the legal profession.

According to the NBA, on September 19, 2025, police officers from Abuja arrested a lawyer, Mohammad Bashir Adam, while he was carrying out his professional duties.

SolaceBase reports that despite presenting identification cards for both the NBA and his workplace, Adam was reportedly handcuffed and dragged into a police vehicle in the presence of his clients.

He was later released after the officers admitted to a case of mistaken identity, having already driven him towards Abuja.

Similarly, on September 22, 2025, the NBA said officers from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center arrested another lawyer, Uba Sani Hamza, at Norman’s Land Magistrate Court in Kano.

He was taken to Abuja, allegedly because he shared a surname with a suspect accused of insulting government officials on social media and due to his contact with a client wanted by the police.

“These incidents represent a disturbing pattern of human rights violations under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police,” the statement read.

The association called on the Attorney General of the Federation to intervene and ensure accountability, while demanding the immediate release of Hamza.

It also held the federal government responsible for his safety and welfare.

Fari stressed that the NBA would continue to advocate for the protection of lawyers’ rights and the rule of law in the country.

Similarly, the Nigerian Bar Association Ungogo branch decried the situation descrbing it as barbaric the actions of the police.

A statement signed by the branch chairman, Ahmad Abubakar Gwadabe on Tuesday urged the Inspector General of Police to immediately address the issue and do the needful.
