The Forum of Senior Citizens on Elongation of Service (FOSCEL), an affiliate of the Kano State Pensioners Union, has commended the Kano State Government for the payment of the sixth tranche of retirees’ gratuities and death benefits, while appealing for consideration for members affected by the recent review of the service elongation policy.

According to a statement issued on Friday in Kano and signed by the forum’s Chairman, Hamisu Muhammad Gwagwarwa, the payment made on April 8 by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was a reflection of the administration’s commitment to the welfare of retired civil servants.

The statement noted that members of the forum expressed “profound gratitude” for the attention given to both serving and retired workers, citing the timely payment of salaries and pensions, and improved disbursement of gratuities.

It added that some of its members also benefited from the new minimum wage before their exit from service.

According to the statement, the forum was formed about 21 months ago following the present administration’s abrogation of the additional five years of service, which set December 30, 2024, as the exit date for affected civil servants across ministries, departments, and agencies.

It stated that members of the forum had accepted the policy change “in wisdom” and complied fully with the directive.

The statement, however, appealed to the state government to consider the situation of members who exited service unexpectedly as a result of the policy review.

It added that settling outstanding obligations would have both moral significance and positive societal impact.

The forum also reaffirmed its support for the present administration, stating that its members had resolved to support efforts aimed at improving service delivery in the state.

According to the statement, appreciation was also extended to the Kano State Pension Board of Trustees, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, and other government agencies for their support and cooperation.

“We remain hopeful that His Excellency will kindly consider the situation of our esteemed members who experienced an unprepared exit from active service,” the statement added.
