Kano presents urban development strategy plan to EU ambassadors
The Kano State Government has presented its Urban Development Strategy Plan to ambassadors and representatives of the European Union (EU) as part of efforts to promote sustainable urban growth, attract investment, and strengthen international development partnerships.
SolaceBase reports that the strategy was unveiled during a high-level engagement with the EU delegation led by Gautier Mignot.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, said on Monday that the administration remains committed to transforming Kano into a modern, resilient and economically vibrant urban centre through strategic planning, infrastructure renewal, environmental sustainability and inclusive development initiatives.
Garo described the Urban Development Strategy Plan as a comprehensive framework designed to address major urban challenges, including rapid population growth, housing shortages, transportation, waste management, climate resilience and the provision of essential public services.
“The strategy represents a forward-looking vision for Kano State and serves as a roadmap for coordinated investments in urban infrastructure, economic development and social welfare,” he said.

He noted that the plan aligns with global best practices and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals while responding to the specific needs and aspirations of Kano residents.
The deputy governor further stressed the importance of collaboration with development agencies, international organisations and private-sector stakeholders in achieving the objectives of the strategy.
According to him, strategic partnerships will be critical to delivering sustainable urban development and improving living conditions across the state.
Members of the EU delegation commended the Kano State Government for what they described as a proactive approach to urban planning and sustainable development.

They also expressed interest in exploring areas of collaboration that could support the implementation of the strategy and improve the quality of life of residents.
Garo said the engagement marked another significant step in the state’s efforts to strengthen international cooperation and attract strategic investments capable of driving inclusive growth and long-term prosperity.
He added that the government would continue to pursue policies aimed at building a smart, sustainable and globally competitive urban environment that creates opportunities for present and future generations.
A statement issued by Lurwanu Idris Malikawa Garu, Public Relations Officer, Deputy Governor’s Office, said the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, who led the delegation, expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded to the delegation in Kano, describing the visit as an important demonstration of the EU’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the state.
Mignot noted that the delegation, comprising ambassadors and representatives from eight EU member states, selected Kano for its annual diplomatic visit this year because of the state’s strategic importance as “a major development hub for Northern Nigeria” and the wider Sahel region.

He said the choice of Kano emphasized the importance the European Union attaches to its partnership with the state and its recognition of the opportunities available for deeper cooperation in development, investment, and economic growth.
The ambassador highlighted the strong economic relationship between Nigeria and the European Union, noting that the EU remains Nigeria’s largest trading partner, while also serving as the country’s leading market for non-oil and gas exports.
According to him, the partnership is supported by significant investments, with EU countries contributing roughly one-third of foreign direct investment in Nigeria, alongside development interventions targeted at job creation, youth empowerment, women’s inclusion, sustainable development, and infrastructure growth
