Infrastructural Decay: Kano secures $100 million World Bank intervention to reform education

Kano state government has secured an intervention fund of over $100 million from the World Bank to address the near collapse and infrastructural deficits in the state education sector.

The Intervention loan granted to the state government under Adolescent Girls’ Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), a five years project; is expected to enhance quality education, conducive environment for teaching and learning as well as assisting families of less privilege.

Before the loan facility was granted, a research conducted by the World Bank on the educational system in Kano indicated about 52 per cent of education facilities in the state are in bad shape, a development that apparently hindered school enrolment.

Unveiling the policy framework and Community Based Committee on Wednesday, State Coordinator,  Ado Tafida explained that seven states, include Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Kebbi, Ekiti, Borno, and Plateau were selected to benefit from the educational intervention project.

Mal. Tafida said Kano was granted the loan because of the systemic constraints and structural challenges noticed in the education sector, begging for urgent attention.

According to him, the project consist of three components including construction of new structure to reduce congestion in classes; provision of scholarship and conditional transfer to less of privilege and training of teachers and other stakeholders.

” The five years project started last year and so far, we have achieved significant development. We have completed and fulfilled all the principles guiding the implementation of the policy. For instance, establishment of School Based Community Committee that would monitor the implementation has been established. This is a condition set out by World bank before money can be released.

” We have also listed out local government and locations where the construction of new classrooms would be set up. We 1,228 junior secondary schools in Kano where rehabilitation would also be executed. Scholarship and conditional cash transfer will be given to less privileged parents to motivate them to send their girl children to schools”.

Reacting on possible influence that may affect the effective implementation of the project, the state coordinator reminded that School Based Community Committee constituted would be the major drivers of the project with technical evaluation and monitoring.
