PHOTOS: Kano showcases climate leadership at COP30 in Brazil
Kano State has taken its drive for climate action to the global stage, hosting a strategic side event at the ongoing COP30 Climate Conference in Belém, Brazil.
The session highlighted the state’s rising influence in environmental governance and its commitment to sustainable development.
Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, outlined the significant progress recorded under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
He noted that Kano has strengthened its climate governance structure, advanced waste management reforms, expanded circular economy initiatives, improved erosion control systems, and stepped up efforts in afforestation and subnational climate finance readiness.

Dr Hashim emphasized that these gains are a result of deliberate institutional reforms and growing collaboration with national and international partners. He added that Kano’s improved national ranking in climate readiness demonstrates the tangible impact of these policies on community resilience.
SolaceBase reports that the ministry also convened a high-level panel discussion titled “Digital Governance and Youth Innovation in Rewiring Climate Future.” The session brought together representatives from the state government, private sector, civil society, and the Federal Ministry of Environment. Discussions centred on the critical role of young people and digital technology in driving climate solutions and shaping a sustainable future for the state.
Panellists shared practical strategies through which communities, institutions, and citizens can contribute to climate resilience, emphasizing that innovation and youth involvement remain key to long-term environmental security.
Dr Hashim reaffirmed Kano State’s unwavering commitment to scaling its climate interventions, attracting new investments, and building partnerships that will position the state as a leading hub for green development in Nigeria and the Sahel.
He concluded that Kano will continue to champion climate action that inspires confidence, creates opportunities, and safeguards the well-being of both current and future generations.
