Kano student wins N1million in Arewa Radio debate competition, others smile home with hundreds of thousands

A student of Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) in Kura local government area, Kano State, Safiya Liman has emerged victorious in the Arewa Radio Debate Competition, taking home the top prize of N1 million after narrowly defeating her opponent by half a mark.

SolaceBase reports that the competition, which began on November 3, 2025, featured 16 secondary schools from across Kano State and was sponsored by Mudassir and Brothers, led by its Managing Director and CEO Alhaji Mudassir Idris Abubakar, along with Pop Cola and Igwe Palace.

In the final round, Liman argued in favor of the motion “Removal of Fuel Subsidy: A Vital Progress in Nigeria’s Economy or Not,” scoring 49.5 points.

She edged out Fatima Salisu from Elma International Schools, who placed second and won N700,000.

Third place went to Hafsat Jamil of Government Girls College, Kano, who defeated Aisha Nasir from Raudatul Jannah School and received N500,000.

Alhaji Mudassir Idris Abubakar expressed delight at the success of the competition, saying it would inspire youths to value education.

“Occasions like this encourage young people to understand the importance of learning and serve as a wake-up call for others to pursue knowledge,” he said.

He added that “lack of knowledge is what has led to many problems in our northern region.”

On his part, Alhaji Musa Sani Ɗanbatta, CEO of MSAD Investment, also highlighted the importance of education for advancement and equity.

He urged businesses and government to provide financial support for such initiatives, noting that knowledge is key to overcoming regional challenges and fostering development.

The General Manager of Arewa Radio, Shehu Bala Kabara, said the station has prioritized promoting Hausa traditions and advancing education since its inception.

He noted that events like the debate are part of the station’s ongoing efforts to empower students and highlight the importance of knowledge.

‘’The primary goal of such initiatives is to host regular events and competitions on diverse topics to motivate secondary school students—particularly girls—while encouraging teachers to enhance their instructional practices, ‘’he noted.
