Kano to embark on comprehensive review of its environmental laws-Official
Kano State Government has announced plans to review its environmental laws to address modern challenges, improve waste management, and enhance public health in the state.
This was revealed by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, during a radio program on Freedom Radio, monitored by SolaceBase on Monday.
Dr. Hashim highlighted that the current environmental laws and practices in the state are outdated and require urgent reform.
‘’Kano State Government is set to undertake a comprehensive review of its environmental laws. The aim is to bring the laws in line with modern realities and ensure they address environmental challenges effectively. The updated laws will include stricter enforcement mechanisms and promote sustainable practices across the state, Dr Hashim emphasized.

He noted that the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) has been functioning both as a regulatory body and an operator, a role that conflicts with the stipulations in the existing laws.
“REMASAB’s primary role, as defined by law, is to regulate waste management, not to operate as a service provider. The evacuation of waste should be carried out by private organizations, not REMASAB,” he stated.
Dr. Hashim disclosed that Kano generates about 9,000 tons of waste daily, but REMASAB manages to evacuate only 30% of this. Approximately 45% of the waste is handled by scavengers, leaving a significant portion uncollected and littering the streets.
To address this, the government plans to streamline waste collection processes, particularly at markets and commercial areas, where issues like double taxation persist. “We have held meetings with the chairpersons of Kantin Kwari, Singer and Sabon Gari Markets, and we intend to collaborate with the Commissioner of Commerce to develop a comprehensive template for waste management. This template will be submitted to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano state, for approval,” Dr. Hashim explained.

The government is also working on a policy to privatize waste management in market areas, allowing private firms to take full responsibility for waste collection and disposal. Furthermore, mobile courts will be introduced to prosecute those who violate the new regulations.
Dr. Hashim emphasized the importance of public awareness and education in achieving the government’s waste management goals. “Many people engage in harmful practices due to ignorance. Therefore, the government will prioritize extensive sensitization alongside the introduction of these policies,” he added.
He also encouraged private investors to propose innovative solutions for sustainable waste management, emphasizing the potential for creating value from waste.
Dr. Hashim concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to fostering a cleaner, healthier Kano. “We are determined to implement all necessary measures to improve waste management and safeguard public health for the benefit of our people,” he said.
This initiative reflects the state government’s dedication to tackling environmental issues and promoting sustainable development.
