Kano to unveil framework designed to stimulate industrialization – Official
Kano State Government has promised to resuscitate ailing industries and support existing ones while attracting foreign investors to the state.
This commitment was made known by the newly appointed Commissioner for Commerce, Investment, and Industry, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, during a familiarization visit to the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) on Tuesday.
Sagagi outlined Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s led government’s plans for industrial growth. “We will soon unveil a policy framework designed to stimulate industrialization in the state,” he announced. “Furthermore, we will conduct a comprehensive census of all industries in Kano, both operational and non-operational. This data will enable us to identify and address the specific challenges faced by these businesses, paving the way for their revival and sustained growth.”

SolaceBase reports that highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting existing industries, Sagagi said, “Just yesterday, I visited Fortune Limited, the producers of Optimum Rice. I assured them that the state government would actively pursue avenues for them to benefit from the Federal Government’s economic recovery plan funds. This will assist industries that have been impacted by import restrictions on essential commodities.”

Emphasizing the importance of inter-agency collaboration, Alhaji Sagagi stated, “The purpose of this visit is to establish a strategic synergy between the Ministry of Commerce, Investment, and Industry and the Kano State Internal Revenue Service. This collaboration will be crucial for boosting revenue generation for the state.” He further elaborated, “We aim to enhance the capacity of our staff for effective revenue collection. We will also work closely with the Revenue Service to identify and address potential revenue leakages. Moreover, we will seek the Governor’s guidance to ensure seamless coordination between relevant ministries, including Agriculture, Land, Finance, and Budget & Planning.”

The Commissioner also underscored the importance of corporate social responsibility. “We will engage with companies operating in the state, both domestic and foreign, to emphasize their role in contributing to the state’s development through meaningful corporate social responsibility initiatives.”
He acknowledged a significant challenge: “The absence of comprehensive and accurate data hinders effective planning and policy formulation. This data gap also limits our ability to provide sound advice to the Revenue Service for optimizing revenue generation and informing government budgeting decisions.”
On his part, Executive Chairman, Kano State Internal Revenue Service, Dr. Zaid Abubakar, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. “We are committed to working closely with the Ministry of Commerce to drive the state towards greater economic prosperity,” Dr. Abubakar stated. “A strong synergy between our organizations will undoubtedly lead to significant improvements in revenue generation for the state.” He concluded by expressing his confidence in the positive outcomes of this collaborative effort.
