Katsina peace deal with bandits fueling insecurity in Kano – Kwankwaso urges Tinubu to act
Former Kano State Governor, Engr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has urged the Federal Government to act swiftly on the growing security challenges in Kano, particularly along the state’s borders.
Speaking on Saturday at the 4th convocation of Skyline University Nigeria, in Kano, Kwankwaso warned that recent attacks should not be underestimated.
He stated that, “The security challenges in Kano, especially along the border with Katsina State, must not be taken lightly.
“Lives and properties are at risk, and the government must act decisively to protect the people,” he said.
He recalled that Kano was historically one of the safest states in northern Nigeria, citing the significant investments made during his tenure to curb threats from Boko Haram and other criminal groups.

However, he noted that banditry has intensified in border local government areas, including Tsanyawa, Shanonu, Bagwai, Gwarzo, and Karaye, where criminals reportedly cross state lines to commit crimes before returning to their bases.
SolaceBase reports that Kwankwaso criticized local accords with bandits in neighbouring states, arguing that they create safe havens for criminal activity.

He stressed that the federal government, as commander-in-chief, has the primary responsibility to secure the nation’s borders and protect citizens.
He further added that, “The banditry started like a joke in Zamfara and has now spread to Sokoto, Kebbi, and parts of Kaduna.
“Kano and Jigawa were once safe, but recent attacks from neighbouring Katsina show the problem is growing,” he added.
He called on the government to implement more effective measures to curb banditry and safeguard lives and property, warning that the situation should not be taken lightly.
