KHAIRUN varsity marks international day of persons with disabilities with public lecture

In celebration of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University, KHAIRUN, has organized a public lecture with the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

SolaceBase reports that the event, held on Tuesday in collaboration with the Centre for Gender Studies, Bayero University, Kano, Learning Disabilities and Education Consult; and Bunny Therapy, brought together advocates, academics, and individuals with disabilities to discuss pathways to a more inclusive society.

In a remark, the Vice Chancellor of KHAIRUN, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities.

Graba highlighted key measures the institution has taken to better the lives of PWDs, including the provision of scholarships and the installation of elevators to ensure accessibility for students and staff with disabilities.

 “We are dedicated and committed to creating an enabling environment for people with disabilities, ensuring they have equal opportunities to thrive.”

The Chairman of the occasion and former Secretary to the Kano state government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, emphasized the importance of leadership in fostering inclusivity, noting that no country can succeed without good leadership.

“It is our collective responsibility to support persons with disabilities, ensuring they receive quality education and opportunities to lead.”

He described persons with disabilities as gifts to society and urged the public to contribute to their empowerment.

Sarkin Kutaren Kano Isyaku Muhammad said over the years, people with disabilities have recorded tremendous achievements in education, employment, and empowerment.

However, they stressed that more efforts are needed to close existing gaps and ensure sustainable improvement in the lives of PWDs.

Also, one of the speakers, Mukhtar Iliyasu Dumbulum, a visually impaired journalist, called on organizations to prioritize aiding persons with disabilities in rural areas.

“Those in rural communities often face greater challenges and require targeted support to access education and essential services.”

The event featured lectures and discussions on strategies to enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebrated every 3rd December, globally, serves as a reminder of the importance of empowering individuals with disabilities and amplifying their voices for a more equitable future.
