By Aminu Abubakar

The Kwara State Government has approved its 2026 capital budget, revealing a major investment in vehicles for public office holders.

The budget includes the purchase of 33 Toyota Corolla hybrid saloon cars and three Toyota Prado GXL SUVs, intended to enhance transportation for government officials and support state operations.

According to the approved budget, the 33 Toyota Corolla hybrid cars will cost the state 2.5 billion naira.

SolaceBase reports that the three Toyota Prado SUVs, which come with 2.8-litre engines and 8-speed automatic transmissions, will cost N563.66 million naira. While the Prado SUVs are planned for high-ranking officials, the Corolla cars will be used by other public office holders.

The vehicles fall under the state’s categories for purchasing motor vehicles and vans.

The 2026 budget also includes other transport-related purchases. A 32-seater Toyota Coaster bus is expected to be bought for N717.35 million naira.

Additionally, the government is allocating N1.9 billion for 2,000 patrol motorcycles for forest guards and security agencies to help reduce insecurity in the state. A Toyota Hilux truck is also budgeted at 56.25 million naira.

While the capital budget spans many sectors, the purchase of the three Toyota Prado SUVs and 33 Toyota Corolla hybrid cars stands out as a headline item.

Other transport-related purchases, including Coaster buses, Hilux trucks, patrol motorcycles, and spare parts, will support the state’s vehicle fleet. The budget also emphasizes ICT modernization, power and energy provision, infrastructure rehabilitation, agriculture, and security.

The investment in vehicles is one of the largest single items in the capital budget.

Earlier reviews show that the Kwara State Government’s approved 2026 budget revealed massive allocations to welfare packages, fuel consumption, consultancy services, training, pilgrimages, and other recurrent expenditures, even as the state grapples with rising living costs and insecurity.

A review of the 2026 budget document indicates that public funds will be spent extensively on administrative and consumptive expenses, many of which recorded significant increases compared to previous fiscal years. While employment, infrastructure, and service delivery remain pressing challenges, the budget underscores continued emphasis on recurrent spending.
