The Kano State Government has uncovered an anomaly in the March 2025 salary payroll, leading to the recovery of over N28 million from the Local Government Treasury.
SolaBase reports that the development was disclosed in a statement by Musa Tanko Muhammad, Press Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, on Friday.
According to the statement, the discovery is part of the state’s broader efforts under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to reform salary administration within the civil service.
According to the statement, a Pay Parade Committee was recently set up to oversee the reforms and had, in preparation for its full mandate, directed all Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and Local Government Councils to review the printed March 2025 payroll vouchers.

The validation exercise exposed a disturbing irregularity in the payroll system of Local Government Councils, where 247 individuals who had either retired or died were still receiving salaries. The fraudulent payments amounted to N27,824,395.40 for March 2025 alone.
The government has since recovered the funds and returned them to the Local Government Treasury, while further investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators of the fraud.
The statement emphasised the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible management of public resources, vowing that all individuals involved in the fraud will be held accountable according to the law.
