Mahdi Shehu reportedly arrested by DSS over fake video

A Kaduna-based activist and political commentator Mahdi Shehu has been arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS.

Shehu was arrested at the weekend over a fake video, bordering on national security matter, which has gone viral..

“I can tell you that he [Mahdi Shehu] is being held in Kaduna. He may also be arraigned in court on Monday or anytime soon,” one of the sources said, adding that the activist was arrested after an attempt at resolving the fake video saga failed.

“He shared an old video on social media and falsely accused the Nigerian government of plans to site a French military base in the North-West.

“Already, clear instructions have been given towards Shehu’s arraignment. Operatives have also been directed to ensure the activist’s rights are not violated while in custody,” another source said.

Shehu had claimed through his lawyer, Mohammed Abubakar, that he was arrested for calling on President Bola Tinubu to probe former President Muhammadu Buhari and some of his top officials.

But Malami, in a statement from his firm signed by A.A. Sherif, a lawyer, alleged that Shehu was arrested in Kaduna when he tried to take advantage of his wife, Aisha, for a sum of $500,000.

While Sheriff rejected the activist’s accusations, he revealed that the suspect was apprehended for charges related to engaging in extortion, criminal intimidation and attempting to deceive a syndicate through the use of GSM numbers and emails.
