Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended a 26-year-old man, Nura Mas’ud, for allegedly setting his grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on fire in Mu’azu village, Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area.
SolaceBase reports that the arrest was confirmed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Adam, in a statement issued on Saturday.
According to Adam, the incident occurred on October 8, 2024, around 4:00 pm, when Mas’ud poured gasoline on his 60-year-old grandmother and ignited her.
The elderly woman succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical attention.
A medical report confirmed her death, and her body was released to family members for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Mas’ud was quickly apprehended by police from the Sule Tankarkar Division and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
During interrogation, Mas’ud admitted to the crime, claiming that his grandmother’s repeated concerns over his physical health had angered him.

Despite several warnings, she continued to express her worries, prompting him to commit the act.
Further investigations revealed that Mas’ud suffers from a mental illness and has been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital.
The State Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, has directed a thorough investigation into the case, ensuring that justice is served to deter similar acts.
