Mangal funds N257m medical care for 21,000 vulnerable patients
A philanthropist, Alhaji Dahiru Mangal has funded medical treatment worth more than N257 million for approximately 21,000 vulnerable patients in Katsina State between 2016 and the present, significantly easing healthcare burdens for disadvantaged residents.
A board of trustees member of the Mangal Foundation, Alhaji Hassan Kabir, disclosed the achievement in Katsina on Monday during the screening of patients suffering from various eye conditions across the state.
Kabir stated that during the period, the foundation funded treatment for roughly 3,000 urology patients, committing more than N140 million to ensure proper medical care and relieve financial challenges faced by families.
In addition, he noted that more than 17,000 patients with different eye-related health issues received medical attention, with total expenditure surpassing N30 million, covering consultations, treatments, medications, and associated care for those vulnerable groups.

He added that the foundation also supported more than 1,000 patients suffering from hernia and hydrocele, investing no less than N87 million to provide comprehensive treatment and post-operative care for all beneficiaries.
Kabir highlighted that patients with minor ailments were examined, treated, provided with free medication, and discharged, ensuring prompt care while reducing the financial burden for families unable to afford standard healthcare services.
“Those requiring surgery had their operations fully funded by the foundation, including all associated expenses such as preoperative tests, medications, hospital stays, and post-operative care until patients were completely discharged safely.
“The foundation has employed some of the country’s best medical teams and procured high-quality drugs, equipment, and surgical supplies to ensure patients receive top-notch care for all funded healthcare interventions,” Kabir added.
He explained that the foundation, established in 2016, was committed to assisting vulnerable groups through healthcare, educational programmes, and economic empowerment, targeting communities that were underserved or struggling with basic social services.
“Since its establishment, it has sponsored thousands of surgical procedures for patients not only from Katsina State but also neighbouring states and even Niger Republic, reflecting its broad regional healthcare support efforts.
“Our objective remains to reduce the financial burden of healthcare for vulnerable individuals, helping those unable to afford basic treatment and ensuring equitable access to essential medical services across the region,” Kabir emphasised.
An ophthalmic nurse at Katsina Eye Centre, Malam Ibrahim Lawal-Rabo, hailed the initiative, noting that such philanthropic interventions were critical given the country’s economic challenges and the growing demand for accessible healthcare.
He stated that philanthropic efforts like Mangal Foundation’s complement government initiatives, helping bridge gaps in healthcare delivery and providing essential services for underserved and economically disadvantaged communities across the state.
Some beneficiaries lauded the foundation’s support, urging government agencies, private organisations, and wealthy individuals to emulate Alhaji Mangal’s humanitarian gesture, promoting community welfare and ensuring that vulnerable populations gain access to vital healthcare services. (NAN)
