Meet acting IGP, Egbetokun

President Bola Tinubu on Monday night appointed DIG Egbetokun Olukayode as the acting Inspector General of Police.

Egbetokun’s appointment as Deputy-Inspector General of Police was approved by Police Service Commission about three months ago representing the South-West geopolitical zone of the country.

The former Chief Security Officer, to president Tinubu during his days as Lagos State governor, DIG Egbetokun replaced DIG Johnson Babatunde Kokumo who retired from the Service on March 15 this year.

His Brief

The new I-G, born on Sept. 4, 1964, was the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Force Criminal Investigation Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja before the appointment.

Egbetokun was born in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun and enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on March 3, 1990, as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

He had his initial training at the Nigeria Police Academy and had served for more than 26 years in the Police Force.

The new I-G holds a Bachelor of Science degree (BSC) in Mathematics from the University of Lagos.

Prior to joining the Police Force, Egbetokun was a Mathematics lecturer at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

Egbetokun was the former Commissioner of Police in Kwara State. He will be replacing Usman Baba.

In 1999, he was appointed Chief Security Officer to President Tinubu when he was Lagos State governor.

He served as the Commander, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos, Squadron Commander, Mopol 5, Benin, Benin City, Officer-in-Charge, Anti-Fraud Unit, FCT Command, Abuja; Chief Superintendent of Police, Administration, Lagos State Command Head Quarters, Ikeja; Area Commander, Osogbo, Osun State Command; and Area Commander, Gusau, Zamfara State Command, among others.

Egbetokun graduated from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in June 1987.

He also holds MSc in Engineering Analysis from UNILAG, Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University, Abraka, and MBA from Lagos State University, Ojo.

He also hold a Ph.D from Al-hikmah University, Ilorin, and was the first Ph.D. candidate to graduate from the university’s Centre for Peace and Security Studies.
