MHWUN honors national leaders from northwest
The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, North West zone, has honoured its National officers from the region.
Speaking on Saturday in Kano at a special awards dinner, MHWUN, National President Dr. Kabiru Ado Sani Minjibir said that the awards serve as both motivation and a challenge to effectively represent the zone and advance the union.
“On behalf of the awardees, I want to thank the leadership of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria in the seven states for organizing this dinner and recognizing us. This serves as motivation and a challenge for all of us to represent the zone well and uplift the Union,” he said.
“This is also the first time we have both the National President and the Secretary General of this great Union from the same zone. Our aim is to build on the foundation laid by our predecessors to maintain the Union’s standards, even if we cannot progress further.”

He emphasized that this recognition is a call to action, urging everyone to do their best for the zone. He also requested ongoing support and prayers, acknowledging the significant challenges ahead.
Dr. Minjibir who is also the Deputy National President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) expressed gratitude to dignitaries, colleagues, and the Kano State Government for their support.
On his part, Chairman of the occasion, the immediate past President, Nigeria Labour Congress Comrade Ayuba P. Waba, expressed confidence in the new leadership of MHWUN.
“I thank God Almighty and the Medical and Health Workers’ Union, particularly the Northwest Zone, for organizing this event. Effort propels success, and without effort, success is unattainable. This marks the beginning of the effort that this new administration under Dr Minjibir is putting in place to continue the trajectory of positive, progressive trade unionism. The Medical and Health Workers’ Union has undoubtedly come a long way.”
He highlighted MHWUN’s long history, formed in 1978 by merging various healthcare worker unions, and emphasized its unique structure, representing workers across all levels and sectors within healthcare.
He credited the Union with providing strong leadership within the Nigerian labour movement and expressed hope that the new leadership would continue this tradition.
In his remarks, the special guest of honour, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, Deputy Governor of Kano State, congratulated the newly elected National President of MHWUN, Dr. Minjibir, and other officers from the Northwest Zone.
The Deputy Governor expressed pride in Dr. Minjibir, the first president from Kano State and the Northwest, and is confident he will uphold the positive legacy and elevate the Union further.
Solacebase reports that the award recipients include Dr. Kabiru Ado Sani Minjibir, National President; Comrade Yusuf Auwal Kiyawa, Secretary General; and Dr. Hussaini Hamisu Yanduna, National Vice President.
