Military commanders urged to master strategic communication amidst security challenges
Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (rtd) has emphasized the crucial role of public relations in modern military leadership, stressing that commanders must master strategic communication to effectively manage their formations’ reputation and engage with the media.
Speaking at the Air Force War College Nigeria (AWCN) in Makurdi, General Usman noted that the increasingly complex security landscape requires military leaders to be adept at communicating their objectives, values, and achievements to various stakeholders.
SolaceBase reports that the clarion call was made in a statement issued to journalists in Makurdi on Saturday.
“The effective use of public relations personnel is no longer a luxury, but a necessity for military commanders,” General Usman said.
He added that by leveraging strategic communication, commanders can build trust, counter misinformation, and promote their formations’ interests.

According to the statement, General Usman’s presentation was part of the ongoing Command Responsibility Course 07/2024, which aims to equip senior Nigerian Air Force officers with the skills required to navigate the complexities of modern military leadership.

In a related development, General Usman also discussed the Defence Headquarters’ guidelines on social media usage, highlighting the need for responsible and secure online engagement by military personnel.
