Murdered in Cold Blood: An agonizing cry for Ummulkhairi-Sa’ida Sa’ad

Our hearts are heavy again with the tragic murder of Malama Ummulkhair of Maraban Jos in Kaduna. She was a mother of five.
She was an Islamic teacher. She was a woman who ran to the state for protection, only to be dragged from a police station, brutally lynched, and set ablaze.
Her husband is broken. Her 14-year-old son is deeply traumatized, crying out for his mother and begging for justice. We cannot look away. We cannot let her name fade into silence.
Kudos to the government of Kaduna State and all those at the forefront of ensuring justice for Malama Ummulkhair. We are backing the current steps to justice! We acknowledge and back the swift actions taken by the authorities so far.
On the Mass arraignment and manhunt
Kaduna State Police Command arraigned 24 suspects before the Chief Magistrate Court in Kawo, Kaduna, on charges including criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, destruction of public property, and culpable homicide.
They have been remanded in custody until July 21, 2026.
An additional 17 suspects have been arraigned, and 33 others have been formally charged with criminal conspiracy and unlawful assembly.
The police has equally made information available that over 100 more suspects remain under investigation as a widespread manhunt continues.
An encouraging High-Level Investigation into Police Complicity on the way too.
Responding to public outrage and a petition detailing eyewitness reports that the victim was forcefully handed over to the mob, the Inspector General of Police has officially ordered the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to take over the case.
The independent FCID probe is specifically tasked with investigating the actions of the DPO and all personnel on duty during the breach. If the allegations of actively releasing her or removing her hijab are proven, they will face full criminal prosecution rather than just internal disciplinary measures.
Impressive institutional Responsibility & children’s Care
Demands for Compensation: Civil society groups, legal bodies like the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN), and the victim’s husband, Aliyu Mohammed, are exerting heavy pressure on both the Kaduna State Government and the Nigeria Police Force.
Other Advocates are fiercely pushing for the state to provide immediate financial compensation, educational sponsorships, and critical psychological trauma care for her four surviving children.
The need for broader reforms to defend our social contract with government
This incident yet again exposes a systemic failure of police station security protocols and crowd control measures.
This tragedy and many like it should serve as a turning point to equip community police stations with better non-lethal crowd-control tools and reinforce the absolute legal obligation to protect citizens in state custody.

As an ordinary citizen, I extend my deepest appreciation, profound gratitude, and full solidarity to the Kaduna State Government and the Nigeria Police Force for their swift intervention, decisive efforts, and robust support in the wake of this tragedy.
True partnership requires honesty. Just as we are quick to hold our institutions accountable when they falter, we must be equally bold and enthusiastic in commending them when they rise to the occasion and do the right thing.

The immediate arraignment of dozens of suspects, the ongoing manhunt for the remaining perpetrators, and the high-level independent probe ordered by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) demonstrate a commendable commitment to the rule of law.
As critical stakeholders in this nation, we stand firmly behind the government and law enforcement. We will continue to support, encourage, and cooperate with every institutional effort aimed at restoring sanctity to our communities and creating a peaceful, secure, and safe environment for us all.

Equally, just as we support these actions, we must also *KEEP THE PRESSURE ALIVE.* We cannot stop talking about this until:
– The DPO Faces True Justice: If the allegations are true that the DPO handed her to the mob, he must face real criminal prosecution, not just a slap on the wrist.
– The Children Are Cared For: The government must take full financial, educational, and psychological care of her 5 devastated children. They lost their mother under the state’s watch.
– No More Jungle Justice: Our system must change so that no other innocent soul faces this horror.
May her gentle soul rest in peace, and may Allah Subhana wa ta’ala grant her Jannatul firdaus a’ala. May her children find peace and tawakkul in Allah while we ensure justice for them. Aaamin.
