My son’s defection to APC- Atiku

Former PDP Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election and member of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to his son, Abba Abubakar’s, decision to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as “entirely personal.”

SolaceBase had reported that on January 15, Abba announced that he was pitching a tent with the APC in a bid to help re-elect President Bola Tinubu, who was his dad’s opponent in the 2023 election.

He also announced the renaming of his political group, originally established in 2022 as the Atiku Haske Organisation, to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation.

Atiku, in a statement released on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, emphasised his commitment to democratic principles, noting that he respects the freedom of association of his family members just as he does for all Nigerians.

“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal.

“In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect,” Atiku stated.

“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.”

While acknowledging his son’s political realignment, the former Vice President seized the opportunity to reiterate his strong opposition to the ruling party.

He insisted that his primary focus remains on the state of the nation, rather than his family’s political differences.

“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he wrote.

Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to the opposition, vowing to continue building a coalition to dislodge the ruling party.

“I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress,” he concluded.
