NAKS appeals to FG for swift resolution with ASUU to avert academic disruption from planned nationwide strike

The National Association of Kano State Students (NAKS) has appealed to the Federal Government to address the ongoing dispute with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), warning that the extended industrial action threatens the academic future of millions of students across Nigeria.

The NAKS President of Bayero University Kano, As-habul Khairi Labaran Usman, and his counterpart at North West University, Khalid Hassan Hudu, made the call on Thursday during a media briefing.

They urged President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Education, members of the National Assembly Committees on Education, and governors across the 36 states to urgently resolve the planned strike.

SolaceBase reports that the planned strike, which was announced by ASUU, has already been extended by an additional four weeks, prompting urgent appeals from student leaders for a resolution so they can return to their studies.

According to the student leaders, students are facing deep uncertainty, with many “hanging between hope and frustration” as the strike continues.

They further emphasized that most Nigerian students cannot afford private universities or overseas education, making public institutions their only accessible path to higher learning.

“Our future depends entirely on a stable public education system, and we cannot afford further delays,” the presidents said.

They also appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and state governors to join efforts toward a swift resolution, urging students across the country to emulate the unity demonstrated in Kano.

“We have spoken with one voice to convey our concerns, and we call on all authorities to listen,” they added.

The strike, announced by ASUU, has already been extended by an additional four weeks.

NAKS urged the government to resolve the matter before the new deadline elapses, so students can return to their studies peacefully.

The association commended the collective effort of student leaders in Kano State, describing it as an example for students nationwide.

They said the coordinated action shows the commitment of Nigerian students to defending the stability of public education.
