Nasarawa lawmaker tasks youths on peace, unity through sporting activities

Mr Solomon Akwashiki, representing Lafia Central Constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has organized a football competition for peace and unity in his constituency, as a build-up to activities to mark his one year in office.

The competition kicked off between Akurba Young Tiger and Bakin Rijiya football clubs of Lafia Central Constituency.

Addressing newsmen at the kick-off of the competition in Lafia Township Stadium on Saturday, Akwashiki said the purpose of the competition was to bring his people together.

“It will unite the people of the communities, irrespective of their ethnic and other affiliations.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition, the first edition by the member, was tagged “a visionary project towards developing youths and grassroots football from ward to international level”.

The lawmaker also said that the exercise would mark the celebration of his one year in office in June.

The lawmaker appreciated God for sparing his life to witness one year in office and promised to continue to initiate programmes for unity and attract speedy development to the constituency.

“During my campaign, I promised the people of my constituency that I will organize a football competition as part of efforts to unite and bring people of different backgrounds together. That is what is happening today.

“Within my one year in office I have achieved a lot. Part of the celebration is going to be the presentation of my score cards where I will showcase what I have done within one year in office.

“My projects cut across all facets of human endeavour in order to improve on the standard of living of my constituents,” he said.

He assured the people of continued effective and good representation .

Mr Mohammed  Isimbabi (Toto/Gadabuke constituency) and Chairman, House Committee on Youths and Sports Development and Mr Hudu A. Hudu, (Awe North Constituency) and Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, expressed happiness with the foresight of the lawmaker for organizing the competition.

They said the event would unite and bring people together in love and harmony.

According to them, football is a strong mechanism that brings people of different interest, ethnicity, and religion to rejoice together.

The duo stressed the need to have mini stadiums in Akwanga, Keffi, and other LGAs, to reduce the pressure on Lafia Township Stadium.

The opening ceremony ended 4-2 after a penalty shoot-out in favour of Akurba Young Tigers FC.

Thirty teams are to contest at the competition.
