The Speaker of Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Mr Danladi Jatau, has urged students to shun drug abuse and other social ills for the development of the education sector and society.

The speaker gave the advice while hosting Nasarawa State Students’ Parliament in his office on Tuesday in Lafia.

He said no nation could achieve speedy development without education, hence the need for students to take their education seriously.

Jatau  appreciated the students’ parliament for their support to the administration in the state.

“I have heard your demands, and your blueprints will go a long way in promoting peace and harmony among the students and others.

“The issue of security and peace are paramount to the wellbeing and development of every society,” he said.

The speaker urged the students to show more understanding with the government and not allow themselves to be used as agents of destruction by selfish individuals.

He assured of his commitment to address the challenges facing the parliament towards the development of the state.

“Your demand for the provision of an act that will see Nasarawa State Students Parliament (NSSP) fully participate in the activities of scholarship disbursement will be looked into,” he said.

The speaker called on the parliament and others in the state to continue to support Gov. Abdullahi Sule’s administration to succeed.

Earlier, Comrade Surajo Muazu, the Speaker of the Parliament said that the visit was to familiarise themselves with the speaker and present their blueprints to him.

Muazu said that the blueprint of the students parliament included an appeal for the establishment of a bill to support the initiative, providing a secretariat for Nasarawa State Students Parliament.

“It also includes provision of  a vehicle for Nasarawa State Students Parliament to ease movement.

“Organising a workshop for all Parliamentarians on legislative business, as well as distribution of learning materials,” he said.

He noted that the parliament blueprint encompassed a  series of programmes to address social vices such as the effect of drug abuse, prostitution by the female students, seminar and workshop on peace and unity.

“Organising  skills acquisition programmes, medical outreaches in the 24 constituencies in the state, security programmes, improving girl child education among others,” he said.
