NASU honors ex- BUK VC Abbas, celebrates registrar Aliyu’s anniversary
The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Bayero University Kano (BUK) branch, has honoured the former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, for what it described as his outstanding leadership and commitment to staff welfare during his five-year tenure.
SolaceBase reports that the union, in an event that took place on Thursday, also celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Registrar, Dr. Haruna Aliyu, praising his efficiency and dedication to the smooth running of the university’s administrative system.
Speaking at the event, NASU BUK Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Nasir Abdulrafiu, said Prof. Abbas would be remembered for his open-door policy and inclusivity.
“He was not a Vice-Chancellor who ruled from an ivory tower; he was a leader who walked among his people, listened to their concerns, and acted upon them with empathy,” Abdulrafiu stated.

He added that the peaceful atmosphere witnessed at BUK under Prof. Abbas was a product of his commitment to dialogue.
“Under his leadership, NASU and the University Management fostered a relationship built on mutual respect and constructive dialogue. His legacy of peace and administrative wisdom is engraved in the sands of time,” he said.
In his response, Prof. Abbas expressed gratitude to NASU for the reception and acknowledged the role of non-academic staff in the university system.
“While the academic staff drives the teaching and research mission, it is the non-teaching staff who ensure that the wheels of the institution turn smoothly.
“Without your dedication and resilience, no meaningful academic activity could take place,” he said.
The former VC commended NASU for its maturity and called on members to support the new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Musa.
“Even at moments of difficulty, you chose dialogue over confrontation and cooperation over conflict. My appeal to you is to continue in this spirit and remain united in the progress of BUK,” he urged.
The event drew the presence of leaders of sister unions ASUU, SSANU, and NAAT, alongside NASU chairmen from other institutions, in what was described as a strong show of solidarity.
