NAWOJ hails swift arrest in Kano killing of housewife, 6 children, urges justice, community vigilance

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kano State Chapter, has praised the Kano State Government and the Nigeria Police Force for the prompt arrest of suspects linked to the killing of a woman and her children in Dorayi, Kumbotso Local Government Area, describing the action as a crucial step toward justice and public reassurance.

The commendation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Kano NAWOJ leadership and jointly signed by its Chairperson, Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara, and the Assistant Secretary, Aisha Muhammad Yanleman, following the police breakthrough in the tragic case.

NAWOJ said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s response and the professionalism of the police demonstrated commitment to safeguarding lives and restoring confidence in the state’s security architecture.

The association noted that the swift arrests had helped calm public tension after the incident, which drew widespread outrage across Kano and beyond.

“The prompt action taken by the Nigeria Police Force has reassured the public that such heinous crimes will not go unpunished,” the statement read, adding that the development showed “a strong resolve by the authorities to uphold the rule of law.”

It extended condolences to the Kano State Government and residents, noting that the incident had “touched the conscience of the entire nation” and should serve as a moment for collective reflection.

Beyond the arrests, NAWOJ called on families and communities to be more attentive to early warning signs of psychological distress among relatives and neighbours.

According to the group, some violent incidents could be prevented if mental health challenges such as depression were identified and addressed early.

NAWOJ further stressed that justice must be allowed to take its full course, saying accountability would not only bring closure to the bereaved family but also deter similar crimes in the future.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the protection of women and children and promoting peace and security in Kano State.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the grieving family,” NAWOJ said, while calling for peaceful coexistence and sustained collaboration between the government, security agencies and communities.
