The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Kano Branch, has raised concern over the rising cases of human rights violations and called for greater adherence to the rule of law as Nigeria marks Democracy Day.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Chairman of the branch, Usman Umar Fari, on Thursday.

SolaceBase reports that Fari stressed that the most crucial dividend of democracy is the unwavering commitment to the rule of law and protection of fundamental human rights, which he described as the bedrock of true freedom, justice, and progress.

He noted that while Nigeria has moved past the era of military dictatorship, where civil liberties were often suppressed under draconian decrees, the present democratic system still falls short in safeguarding citizens’ rights.

“From January to date, not less than 1,300 cases alleging infringement of fundamental rights were filed before the Kano State High Court alone,” he said.

He also added that this figure does not include similar cases before the Federal High Court in Kano or those lodged with the National Human Rights Commission.

Fari further decried the worsening insecurity that has crippled agricultural activities in many communities and deepened poverty across the country.

He also cited limited access to public information, lack of transparency in public spending, and inefficiencies in the judicial system as critical challenges undermining democratic progress.

“These are not trivial concerns. The consistent protection of human rights, economic prosperity, transparency, access to information, and an efficient justice system are the true measures of a thriving democracy,” he said.

He urged both citizens and leaders to recommit themselves to strengthening these democratic pillars, adding that only through collective resolve can Nigeria become a nation where justice, equity, and dignity prevail for all.
