NBA lauds Sunusi Musa’s appointment as chairman of IPCR

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has congratulated its distinguished member, Sunusi Musa, SAN, on his recent appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Chairman of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR).

In a statement signed by the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, on Friday, the Association described Musa’s appointment as a testament to his intellect, integrity, and commitment to national development.

‘’The announcement has been widely celebrated as a recognition of Musa’s outstanding contributions to the legal profession, governance, and peacebuilding efforts in Nigeria, ‘’the statement said.

According to the NBA President, “Your remarkable depth of experience in law and public engagement makes you exceptionally suited for this important national assignment. The NBA is proud and confident that you will bring wisdom, balance, and strategic leadership to the IPCR in advancing the cause of peace and unity across our country. We wish you a successful tenure. Congratulations, Learned Silk!”

The statement said, ’’Sunusi Musa, a respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria, is widely known for his legal expertise and human rights advocacy. His elevation to the rank of SAN in 2022 by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) followed years of dedicated service to the legal profession, during which he distinguished himself in litigation, legislative drafting, and public interest advocacy.

Born in Kano State in 1978, Musa earned his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Bayero University, Kano, in 2005 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2006.

He went on to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Maiduguri in 2009 and a Master’s degree in Legislative Drafting from the University of Benin in 2016. Over the years, he has recorded significant successes in the Nigerian judicial system, leading high-profile cases that resulted in seven Supreme Court victories and eight decisions at the Court of Appeal.

His work also extends to regional courts, having represented victims of the Apo killings at the Community Court of ECOWAS and secured justice in notable human rights cases at the High Court of the FCT.

Beyond his legal practice, Musa has been actively involved in governance and political engagement. In 2018, he led the Nigeria Consolidation Ambassadors Network, which successfully raised funds for former President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign, demonstrating his ability to mobilize support for national leadership. He has also represented prominent political actors in electoral litigations, further cementing his reputation as a versatile legal mind and strategic thinker.

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is Nigeria’s primary agency for peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and mediation. It provides policy advice and implements programs aimed at promoting national unity, resolving disputes, and strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements on peace matters. With security challenges and ethnic tensions still prevalent in various regions, Musa’s leadership is expected to bring renewed vigor and strategic reforms to the Institute’s operations.

The NBA expressed optimism that Musa will leverage his experience, legal acumen, and passion for justice to strengthen the IPCR’s mandate and promote lasting peace in the country. His appointment is coming at a critical time when Nigeria requires innovative solutions to address security challenges, socio-political conflicts, and threats to national cohesion.

The Association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that advance peace, justice, and national development.
