Next Wave: New generation of Saudi artists showcase avant-garde works in Berlin art week

The Misk Art Institute from Riyadh and Berlin Art Institute are presenting works and projects by nine up-coming Saudi artists from September 14th through to October 14th, 2022.

For the first time, the show is featuring the results of the collaboration between the artists programs of the two institutes in Berlin and Riyadh that were launched in 2021.

A statement from the organisers on Thursday said the exhibition Next Wave, gathers works and projects by a new generation of Saudi artists dealing with issues such as the environment, technology critique, determinism, the sense of belonging, coming to terms with memories, and the encounter with urban spaces.

‘’They bring together the following practice-oriented promotional programs: Misk Art Institute’s Masaha Residency Program and the BAI Residency Program run by the Berlin Art Institute – all of which emphasize the importance of critical practice and research, ‘’the statement said.

According to the statement, the title of the exhibition, Next Wave, alludes to avant-garde and uncharted territory. The works and projects by the artists are at the center of the exhibition, with research and documentation playing a crucial role.

It noted that nine artists featuring in the exhibition are: Abdulmohsen Albinali, Abeer Sultan, Bashaer Hawsawi, Fatma Abdulhadi, Hana Almilli, Sara Khalid, Yousef Almana, Ziad Kaki and Nada Alturki.

On September 15, a panel will be held in the context of the exhibition, in which the artists discuss their different experiences with the Misk Art Institute and the role of art as a bridge between cultures.

On September 16, the Misk Art Institute invites visitors to discuss with the exhibiting artists, accompanied by Oud music and Saudi coffee.

Solacebase reports that the exhibition is a collaboration between the Misk Art Institute and the Berlin Art Institute.
