Girl Child Day: NGO distributes sanitary pads to students in Kano

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) the Alkhairi Orphanage and Women Development, has organized a one-day sensitization program and sanitary pads distribution among students of Government Girls Arabic College GGAC Goron Dutse, in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.

Speaking during the program, the Executive Director Alkhairi Orphanage and Women Development, Ambassador Ruƙayya Abdulrahman, says that the program Themed Girls’ Vision For the Future was organized by the Alkhairi Orphanage and Women Development (AOWD) in collaboration with the Binta Child Right Empowerment Foundation.

She noted that the school was selected to celebrate the International Day of Girls Child, a day that celebrates awareness of girls’ child, especially on their hygiene, and education among others.

PROMISES-DELIVERED

The Executive Director noted that the International Day of the Girl’s Child is celebrated annually on October 11th as a global observance day initiated by the United Nations.

“This day serves as a reminder that empowering girls and ensuring their rights is not only a moral imperative but also a catalyst for sustainable development.”

She added that “When we empower girls, we unlock their potential as change-makers and leaders.”

“Nowadays, women especially girl child are facing numerous challenges which include Child labour and Human trafficking among others.”

Delivering a lecture at the event, a lecturer with the Kano State College of Health Science (School of Hygiene Kano) Department of Health Education Mr. Iliyasu Ya’u Rabil, says the rationale behind the celebration of the day, is to educate the girl child on their role in the world particularly in their regions.

He added that among the awareness of the girl child during the commemoration of the day is personal hygiene.

“The importance of awareness on personal hygiene is not over-emphasized, among the personal hygiene importance is proper hand washing with running water, mouth hygiene, nail and skin care, and proper washing of clothes among others.

On her part, the principal GGAC Goron Dutse Hajia Fatima Lawal applauded the effort by the organizations urging parents to be vigilant with the hygiene of their children.
