Nigeria to benefit from potential halal market estimated at $9.7 trillion-SON

The Standards and Metrology Institute of Islamic Countries (SMIIC) has admitted the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) as the 44th member of the organisation.

The SON Director-General, Malam Farouk Salim, disclosed this on Monday at the organisation’s special day at the ongoing 42nd Kano International Trade Fair.

Solacebase reports that with the admission, Nigeria thus becomes the 19th African country in the 43 – member organisation.

Salim said that SON had become an integral part of the potential global Halal market size that was expected to reach about 9.71 trillion dollars by 2025.

He said that the last one year had enhanced the organisation’s technical capacities in standard development, accredited management system, training and certification.

He further said that as year 2021 wounds down, importers and dealers in life-endangering products like tyres and lubricants should imbibe self-regulation and avoid selling substandard and life -endangering items to people.

The SON boss advised regulatory authorities to be proactive while road transport workers, employers and commuters should pay closer attention to the state of tyres on vehicles, particularly commercial transportation.

According to him, in October, the Standards Council approved 37 New Nigerian Industrial Standards which cut across various sectors of the nation’s economy based on stakeholders and market demands as well as the optimization of available resources.

He, however, said that SON had offered to provide technical expertise to Lagos State Government in its efforts to get to the root cause of the recent multi-storey building at Ikoyi.

He urged Nigerians to disregard insinuations on the unfounded conclusion without scientific basis on the possible causes of the building collapse.

SON Kano Trade Fair

On his part, Alhaji Dalhatu Abubakar, President, Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, represented by Vice-President, Amb. Usman Darma, thanked SON for organising the programme to enlighten the business community on the importance of selling and buying standard products. (NAN)
