The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Kano State Council has expressed worries about the incessant issue of backlog of unremitted pension contributions by some organizations in the state, with a staggering accumulation of over N75 billion as of May 2023.

The Chairman of the Congress, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, disclosed this on Wednesday during the International Workers Day celebration at Sani Abacha International Stadium, Kano.

He lamented that the issue poses a serious threat to the financial security of retirees, reiterating that the non-remittance leads to deductions of pension thus non-payment of full pension for years.

However, he commended the present administration for commencing full payment of pension, adding that “we demand that all defaulting government institutions shall commence paying the backlog to enable settlement of retirement and death benefit.”

He assured that if an elaborative analysis of the backlog is done and a strategy to recoup the money is put in place, the accrued benefits could be settled within few years.

He also commended the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his exemplary leadership and unwavering support for the workers of state.

He highlighted that the celebration was in commemoration of “the hard work, dedication, and resilience of workers all around the world, let us also reflect on the history and significance of this day.”

He stated, “Am proud to remind you that Kano state was the first to identify with this day in Nigeria in the year 1980 under the leadership of late Governor of Kano state Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar Rimi of blessed memory.”
