NSCDC apprehends suspected rail vandal, 2 impersonators in Kano

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it has detained a 22-year-old suspect over an alleged rail vandalism in Kano State.

The corps also detained two suspects for allegedly impersonating its personnel.

The Commandant of the corps, Mohammed Hassan-Agalama, said this in a statement by its spokesman, Ibrahim Idris, on Thursday in Kano.

Hassan-Agalama said the suspect (name withheld), allegedly involved in the destruction and theft of 11 rail line clips under the ongoing Federal Government’s railway modernisation project linking Kaduna to Kano.

He said the suspect, a resident of Kuya village in Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was apprehended by operatives of the corps following credible intelligence at a village in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State.

PROMISES-DELIVERED

The commandant said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect vandalised and removed 11 rail line clips installed on the new standard gauge.

He said the corps recovered a hammer from the suspect.

While reiterating commitment to protect critical national assets, Hassan-Agalama warned that vandals and other criminal elements would be prosecuted.

He urged residents of the state to support security agencies with timely and useful information to curb acts of vandalism and other criminal activities in their communities.

Meanwhile, the corps detained two suspects (names withheld) for allegedly impersonating its personnel.

Hassan-Agalama said the suspects hailed from Kawo Jirga in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

“Before their arrest, the duo were parading themselves as civil defence volunteers; in reality, they do not have any record of being captured on the volunteers database.

“They found a location with a civil defence logo molesting and maltreating a social media comedian, an act akin to abuse of fundamental human rights,” he said.

He said the suspects would be charged to court on completion of investigations.  (NAN)
