Nurseries under spotlight as Kano gears up for 10 million tree planting in 2026

The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to boost environmental sustainability through its tree-planting campaign, with plans to distribute millions of seedlings across the state.

In a statement signed on Monday, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahir M. Hashim, said the initiative is being implemented with the leadership and approval of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who has set a target of planting 10 million trees this year.

SolaceBase reports that the commissioner explained that he recently embarked on an inspection visit to tree nurseries in Gwarzo and Dawakin Kudu local government areas to assess progress and ensure readiness for the large-scale distribution exercise.

According to him, the nurseries currently host a variety of seedlings, including moringa, baobab, lime, neem, mango, orange and locust bean trees, which will be distributed for planting across different parts of Kano State.

“We have varieties such as moringa (zogale), baobab (ɗorawa), lime (lemon tsami), neem (malmo), mango (mangwaro), sweet orange (lemon zaƙi) and locust bean (goba), which we intend to distribute for planting in various parts of the state,” he said.

KANO ACRESAL PROJECT

Dr. Hashim called on community groups and schools to take advantage of the programme by applying for the seedlings once the process begins.

He noted that interested organisations would be required to fill out forms that will be made available or write directly to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

The initiative, he added, forms part of broader efforts by the Kano State Government to combat environmental degradation and address the impacts of climate change through afforestation.
