Old Naira Notes: Atiku calls for extension of deadline

The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has called for extension of the deadline by Central Bank of Nigeria to phase out old naira notes in circulation.

SOLACEBASE reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria issued January 31st, 2023, as deadline to phase out the old naira notes insisting that on no account would it extend the period.

Many Nigerians have been calling on the CBN to extend the date considering the scarcity of the new naira notes and the problem of rejection of the old naira notes for transaction.

Atiku in two minutes thirty-five seconds video released by his media aide, Abdulrasheed Uba Sharada, on Saturday said the deadline is creating untold hardship on the people.

According to Atiku, redesigning of currency is a normal thing across the world, hence the situation in Nigeria is not unusual but rather the January 31st deadline is creating hardship on the people.

‘’Many Nigerians, especially farmers, artisans and those in the rural areas do not have bank accounts, so the time frame for the change of old notes to new one is not achievable, ‘’Atiku said in the video.

He appealed for the extension of the deadline so as to address the situation of hardship facing the people.
