“Only Sanusi II is the legitimate emir of Kano” — Kwankwaso

Former Kano State Governor, Engr.  Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has declared that only Emir Muhammad Sanusi II is the legitimate Emir of Kano, dismissing any other claims to the throne.

Kwankwaso made this statement on Saturday during the 4th convocation ceremony of Skyline University Nigeria, held at the Amani Event Centre in Kano.

Addressing the audience, he said, “Muhammad Sanusi II is the only Emir recognised by the people and government of Kano State.

“Any other person claiming to be emir, whether appointed from Abuja or elsewhere, is not recognised and is therefore fake.”

The Kano Emirate has been embroiled in a prolonged dispute since 2019, when the state government created five new emirates, significantly reducing the powers of then-Emir Muhammad Sanusi II.

In 2020, Sanusi II was dethroned and replaced by Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano.

The controversy deepened when the NNPP-led government in 2023 reversed the previous decisions, abolishing the newly created emirates and reinstating Sanusi II.

Since then, a tussle over the legitimacy of the emirship has persisted, with several court cases at the High Court and the Court of Appeal.
