Prof. Umar Pate: The embodiment of humility, excellence, transformational mentorship – Turaki Abdulhamid Yahya

By Turaki Abdulhamid Yahya

It is both an honour and a personal conviction to pen these words in recognition of a man whose influence has profoundly shaped my academic, intellectual, and moral trajectory — Professor Umar A. Pate.

From my formative years as an undergraduate student at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), to my postgraduate studies.

One thread remains constant: Prof. Pate has been a consistent source of inspiration, mentorship, and guidance. His impact on my life is not only academic, it is human, spiritual, and enduring. He is not only a scholar of global standing but a living testament to the power of humility, integrity, and service to others.

In a society where titles often breed arrogance, Prof. Pate represents a striking exception. Despite his vast influence within Nigeria, across Africa, and internationally, he remains remarkably humble, accessible, and self-effacing. He is a Vice-Chancellor, a public intellectual, a trusted voice in academia and development discourse, but he carries all these honours with the modesty of a Traditional leader (Kaigama Adamawa), who sees leadership as responsibility rather than privilege.

It is also worth noting that Prof. Pate holds the revered traditional title of (Kaigama Adamawa) the Kingmaker in the historic Fombina Kingdom. This is not just a cultural honour; it is a recognition of his wisdom, leadership, and statesmanship. Yet, even with such a revered title, he remains down-to-earth, gracious, and deeply committed to the progress of those around him.

I have continued to learn from him not only through his lectures and writings but through his lifestyle, demeanour, and interpersonal ethics. His simplicity in dressing, calmness in speech, warmth in human relations, and attention to detail, including remembering people’s names and families are powerful lessons in leadership and emotional intelligence.

Many who know me from my days at Bayero University Kano to my current role as a lecturer, have observed my deep admiration for Prof. Pate. Some refer to me jokingly as “Small Pate”, a reference I wear with pride. Even my own students often ask, “Sir, why do you remind us of Prof. Pate?” My response is consistent and sincere: Because I believe in what he represents. He is a mentor, a role model, and a father figure whose values I deeply cherish.

In the grand scale of his mentees and admirers, I may seem insignificant. But in his characteristically generous manner, Prof. Pate has always made me feel seen, supported, and trusted. He has extended his network to me, introduced me to people and platforms beyond my imagination, and offered me the kind of encouragement that sustains long after the applause fades. That is why my loyalty to him is not just personal, it is principled. It is grounded in gratitude, shaped by experience, and anchored in shared values.

He is a realist in thought and action, and a leader who holds firmly to the ideals of accountability, due process, and institutional excellence. He uplifts without discrimination and listens with genuine concern. In every phone call, he never fails to ask after my parents, an act that speaks volumes about his depth of character.

Prof. Umar A. Pate is more than an academic. He is a phenomenon. A legacy in motion. A man who teaches without speaking, and leads without coercing. The lessons I have gained from him both spoken and unspoken, will remain foundational in my life and practice.

May the Almighty Allah continue to preserve him in strength, wisdom, and good health. May his light continue to shine, so we may continue to learn, grow, and lead in the path he exemplifies.

With deep respect, admiration, and unwavering loyalty,

Yahya, Turakin Gurin, a Part-Time Lecturer, Department of Mass Communication
Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State.
