2023: Peace committee expresses worry over violent attacks in Kano

Kano Peace Committee (KPC), an affiliate of the National Peace Committee co–chaired by Emeritus Prof. Ibrahim H. Umar  and Most. Rev. Bishop Dr. John Namaza Niyiring, has expressed concern over the recent political happenings in Kano state.

In a statement issued and signed by the committee’s Head of Secretariat Ambassador Ibrahim A. Waiya, the committee which was established to facilitate peace in Kano State especially before, during and after elections had observed with dismay the unfolding political happenings which glaringly threaten the peace and security of the State.

SOLACEBASE recalls that the NNPP and the APC have been trading blames over recent violent attacks in the metropolis especially the attacks last Saturday and Sunday that left some people seriously injured around Gwale local government area, of Kano State.

The statement said that the recent utterances of the party leadership of both APC and NNPP, are quite dangerous to the peace and public safety in Kano.

The statement described the recent happenings as unfortunate, uncalled for and total contravention to the efforts so far invested on the campaigns for the promotion of peace and security in the State and electoral laws 2022, as amended.

According to the statement, the Committee had facilitated and organized the 1st and 2nd signing of the Peace Accord in Kano State, in collaboration with the National Peace Committee, before the conduct of the 2019 general elections in the State adding that the Signing of the Peace Accord was chaired by His Excellency, the Chairman, National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdussalami Abubakar, GCFR.

“As the 2023 General elections is fast approaching, the Kano Peace Committee (KPC), has been engaging in collaboration with the National Peace Committee, to promote peaceful conduct of all electioneering campaign activities in the stay. The effort is to complement the mandate of the security agencies, and ensure that Kano remains peaceful before, during and after the 2023 elections” stated the statement.

It added that, the Kano Peace Committee and National Peace Committee are disturbed by the emerging threat to the peace and security in the State, the committee wishes to unequivocally condemn the development as unacceptable and unpardonable.

“We call in strong terms the leadership of the two parties NNPP and APC, to respect the rules of the game in the interest of public safety, security and wellbeing of Kano citizens.”

The Kano and National Peace Committees are planning to organize high level engagements with political actors in the State, including the signing of the Peace Accord which shall be presided over by the Chairman, National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar GCFR,” the statement said.

The planned interventions by both committees are to pave way for deliberate actions to ensure peace and security in the State.

The committee also called on Kano state governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to prevail on the situation by ensuring that, all political parties are accorded enabling environment to conduct their political activities.

It also called on the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Dauda, to investigate the alleged attacks on some households in Gwale Local Government areas in the State to bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to book.
