PHOTOS: Kano launches operation relocate roadside food vendors amid health concerns
In response to growing public concern over the sale of food in unsanitary conditions, the Kano State Government has initiated a major crackdown on unhygienic food vending across the state.
SolaceBase reports that the operation, a joint effort by several government agencies, aims to protect public health and preserve environmental standards.
On Wednesday, a task force led by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, carried out inspections at several locations known for unhygienic food vending practices. Targeted areas include Naibawa (Katangar FIAT), Kano Line Motor Park, and BUK Road.

During the inspection, Dr. Hashim highlighted alarming conditions at Naibawa Yan Lemo, where the team discovered that open defecation was happening dangerously close to fruit vending stalls.

“Immediate action was taken,” he said. “We ordered the removal of all food items from the site and directed that the area be thoroughly cleaned. Officials from the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA) have been deployed to enforce compliance with this directive.”

At Kano Line Motor Park and BUK Road, vendors were found selling perishable items such as fresh milk and fish in unhygienic roadside conditions. According to Dr. Hashim, such practices not only endanger public health but also contribute to traffic congestion.

“We held discussions with the vendors and their union leaders, informing them of the need to vacate these locations within one week. The government remains committed to ongoing dialogue with the vendors to identify suitable and permanent locations that meet both hygiene and organisational standards.”
Dr. Hashim emphasised that the operation reflects the government’s dedication to ensuring a clean and healthy environment for all residents of Kano State. He also stressed the critical importance of maintaining proper hygiene in food handling and sales to prevent disease outbreaks.
“The Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is committed to creating an environment where businesses can thrive without compromising public well-being,” he added.
The inspection team include the Managing Director of KAROTA, Engr. Faisal Mahmud, the Governor’s Special Advisor on Media, Ibrahim Adam, directors from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and representatives from the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC).
